Skincare Tips for Menopause: Managing Hormonal Changes

February 21, 2023 2 min read

Menopause marks a transition in a woman's life that often comes with unwelcome thoughts, feelings, and physical changes. The transition can be difficult to manage, especially when it comes to skincare. As a medical spa located near the Jersey Shore, we want to make sure you have all the knowledge you need to tend to your skin during this stage of life. Here are just a few of the skincare tips we recommend to keep your skin healthy during menopause.

1. Choose the Right Cosmetic Products

As you age, your skin changes in both texture and oil production. When you're going through menopause, your skin can become dry and oily simultaneously. To help keep your skin balanced, look for facial cleansers that are pH-balanced and non-comedogenic. While you may be tempted to purchase cleansers with extra moisturizers and oils, avoid those that are heavy in alcohol as they will make your skin dry.

2. Look for Nutrient-Rich Products

While you don’t necessarily want products with oils, look for nutrient-rich products to hydrate and nourish your skin. Look for cosmetic products that contain vitamins A (Retinol), C, and E as they can help your skin to remain healthy during menopause.

3. Exfoliate

During menopause, it's important to exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells. Look for a scrub or mask with lactic or salicylic acid. Avoid products with acids like glycolic acid as they can cause additional dryness.

4. Wear Sunscreen

UV radiation is known to speed up the aging process, so wear sunscreen when outdoors. Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it every two hours when outside.

5. Practice Mindful Hydration

During menopause, your skin often becomes dehydrated. Make sure you keep your skin hydrated with plenty of water, and use a moisturizer with hyaluronic or glycerin to lock in the moisture.
