Let’s talk acne…
Acne comes in all shapes and sizes and can vary from mild to severe and can last a couple days, months, or even years. Some people might experience a combination of types or predominantly one form of acne. While we’ll get into the different types, there’s two main categories acne is known to be classified under: non-inflamed and inflamed.
Non-inflammatory acne, otherwise considered as “comedones”, are either open or closed lesions of the skin. Closed comedones cultivate from build-up under the skin, whereas open comedones get filled with dirt and debris external from the skin. Inflammatory acne, also recognized as a lesion, are those more visible red bumps that might be painful to the touch.
We all want clear-skin confidence, but first it’s important to learn about the types of acne.
With the 6 forms of acne listed, they fall into subtypes of non-inflamed and inflamed acne. Whiteheads (closed comedones) and blackheads (open comedones) are a condition of non-inflammatory acne. Whereas papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts fall into the inflamed lesion category. Papules are those red bumps from excess oil that develops when acne first becomes inflamed. Similar to whiteheads, pustules create a white center, but because they are inflamed they can be larger, red, and sore. It’s best to try to avoid popping pustules because it can cause bacteria to spread onto your skin. Deep under the surface of the skin, either skin colored or red, nodules are formed by an underlying infection of the pore and can be pretty painful. Comparable to nodules, cysts are the most severe acne types and the most difficult to treat. Cysts also grow because of an infection within the skin, but are very visibly inflamed and uncomfortable.
